Corporate Sustainability
Intelligent construction means taking responsibility

As an international construction company, we build for generations and we shape worlds – with and for people. Sustainable action is a key component of our responsibility towards society and also serves as the foundation for our success. It gives us a clear competitive advantage and encompasses all economic, environmental and socially relevant aspects.

Sustainability Report

The principles of sustainable corporate management are anchored in the PORR sustainability strategy. The annual sustainability report provides detailed information on project progress, initiatives and successes.

PORR has been reporting regularly on its ESG activities since 2009. Since the 2024 financial year, reporting has been carried out in accordance with the requirements of the EU CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). Since 2018, it has been audited by third parties in accordance with Limited Assurance.

Sustainability

PORR builds
today for tomorrow

Due to its high energy and resource consumption, the construction industry has diverse and far-reaching impacts on the environment and society. At the same time, it shapes living environments, creates jobs and makes a significant contribution to economic development. This gives rise to a special responsibility to balance ecological, social and economic aspects.

Our sustainability strategy

Derived from the Group strategy, the Sustainability Strategy 2030 is based on continuous stakeholder dialogue, the results of the materiality analysis, and current and future regulatory requirements.

International standards and initiatives such as the UN Global Compact, CDP, respACT, klimaaktiv and the Concrete Sustainability Council are incorporated into the strategy. Through cross-divisional collaboration and the pooling of internal expertise, PORR develops integrated solutions across the entire value chain – and actively drives the sustainable transformation of the construction industry.

PORR’s sustainability strategy is based on the three pillars of environmentsocial and governance and comprises 8 action fields with a total of 15 topics, which flesh out the strategic priorities. At the thematic level, PORR has defined 18 measurable targets to be achieved by 2030.

To implement these targets, 55 measures have been established, which translate the strategic guidelines into operational activities in day-to-day business and are managed and regularly reviewed across the Group.

Our sustainability strategy is therefore more than just a framework: it is our compass for future-oriented action and a key success factor for a resilient and competitive construction industry.

Status Quo

The implementation of the 2030 Sustainability Strategy is already showing clear progress. A large proportion of the 55 measures are already being implemented or have been integrated into standard operations – a significant step towards PORR’s sustainable transformation.

Strategic
Management

The Corporate Sustainability (CS) department reports to the CFO. It is responsible for Group-wide sustainability issues relating to the business model and strategy. The department is responsible for sustainability reporting, the further development and monitoring of the sustainability strategy and targets, as well as raising awareness of ESG issues across the Group. The department regularly consults with the Executive Board and the sustainability committees on current developments and issues.

To ensure corporate development is aligned with sustainability, the highest supervisory body is the Sustainability Committee within the Supervisory Board. This committee meets twice a year and reviews the extent to which the set measures have been achieved, as well as the planned approach.

The Group Sustainability Board, the cross-departmental steering committee that meets quarterly, comprises the heads of sustainability-related departments, the CFO and the CS department. The focus is on defining, steering, monitoring and implementing the sustainability strategy and measures.

In parallel, the Executive Board is further involved through regular management reviews.

Operational
Management

Group-wide coordination and performance monitoring of sustainability management is carried out by the CS department. The operational implementation of the measures is carried out by the respective specialist departments. In topic-specific working groups, the nominated experts focus either on optimising the data basis and data collection or on strategy development and the setting of measures.

Only by involving all PORR markets can a Group-wide approach to sustainability management be ensured, one that takes into account local regulations, socio-political parameters and human resources. ESG governance is therefore mirrored in the individual countries.

This means that Local Sustainability Boards and Local Topic Working Groups are established in the respective countries. In every PORR market, there is an ESG Director who is responsible for the overarching coordination of sustainability management in the respective country. At the quarterly meetings of the ESG Directors Board, best practice examples, lessons learnt from the PORR markets and areas where there is a need to catch up on sustainability issues are to be highlighted.

ESG Compliance

Stakeholder Engagement
A comprehensive dialogue

PORR’s long-term economic success is based on aligning the company’s activities with the needs of its stakeholders. An open, regular and target-group-oriented dialogue with all stakeholders promotes a shared understanding of interests, expectations and goals. The impacts, risks and opportunities identified through this dialogue are incorporated into the further development of strategy and objectives. The exchange of experience takes place both in project management and within the company through cross-company networks, conferences, trade fairs, workshops, various information channels and much more.

  • Employee satisfaction survey: Group-wide survey to gather perceptions, experiences and areas for improvement.
  • Customer satisfaction survey: Standardised, digital and group-wide survey conducted upon project completion.
  • Roundtables: Discussions with suppliers on decarbonisation, the circular economy and sustainable procurement.
  • Direct dialogue with shareholders, investors and banks: communication via annual general meetings, roadshows, conferences, conference calls and one-to-one meetings.
  • Collaboration with partners: Joint research projects and the collaborative development of sustainable solutions.

PORR Base Certificate
for Sustainable Construction Sites

PORR is the first construction company in Austria to receive the ÖGNI Basic Certificate for sustainable construction sites in building and civil engineering – a pioneering step that underlines the company’s long-standing commitment to quality, environmental awareness and sustainable construction.

The Basic Certificate confirms that PORR already meets the essential sustainability standards as a basic requirement on all Austrian construction sites. This includes, for example, the overall organisation of the construction site, the analysis of environmental risks and the development of concepts for noise and dust protection. Resource conservation through the recording and monitoring of energy and water consumption on the construction site also plays an important role.
