Construction of the Floridsdorf Clinic
A central guiding principle is to create healing environments: spaces that are not only functional but also designed to be pleasant—with plenty of natural light, green outdoor areas, and quiet retreats—because the environment itself can be an integral part of the healing process. After all, it is not just about diagnoses and treatments, but about well-being, recovery, and quality of life. For this reason, the clinic relies on innovative organizational concepts designed to make processes more effective and patient-friendly.
The clinic also sees itself as part of a responsible public healthcare system. This is reflected in its wide range of services, which extends from emergency care and specialized centers to comprehensive outpatient and inpatient care.
The new specialized hospital, focusing on trauma surgery, orthopedics, cardiology, and cardiac surgery as well as obstetrics and psychiatry, is situated on a 111,000 m2 site. It includes, among other things, 785 beds, a state-of-the-art surgical center, a helipad, and attractive outdoor facilities—the Healing Gardens. Within a challenging construction period of just 20 months, PORR completed the structural work for the entire 214,900 m² of gross floor area. To meet this schedule, 14 cranes operated over the construction site during the peak construction period, and approximately 550 workers were on site. The establishment of an on-site concrete mixing plant also played a significant role. Technical highlights also included special formwork and scaffolding methods for the cantilevered structural elements, as well as measures to compensate for vibrations and electromagnetic radiation from the adjacent rail traffic. Despite these logistical challenges, the PORR team was able to contribute to an outstanding healthcare infrastructure in Austria and build one of the most modern hospitals in Europe.
