Ceneri base tunnel railway engineering

Bellinzona-Lugano, Switzerland / 03.2018 - 08.2020

The Ceneri Base Tunnel (CBT) in Canton Ticino is part of the "New Rail Link through the Alps" (NEAT) project of the century. The work comprised on the one hand the "railway engineering and overall coordination" lot in the two single-track tunnel tubes, and on the other hand the connection of the adjacent tracks above ground north and south to the existing railway network.

The Ceneri Base Tunnel is the continuation of the 57km long Gotthard Base Tunnel, which has been commissioned in December 2016.

State-of-the-art railway technology in the base tunnel.

It is the third largest tunnel construction in Switzerland. The 30.7km long tunnel system consists of two single-track tubes - the east tube (15.4km) and the west tube (15.3km). For safety reasons, the two directionally separated, 40m apart tunnel tubes are connected to each other by cross-cuts every 325m.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
