15 km of motorway renovation in close cooperation
The project is being implemented as a joint venture between PORR's civil engineering divisions in Styria (project lead) and Burgenland, with construction areas in Frohnleiten, Greinbach and Stegersbach. The construction work is divided into two construction lots: SOUTH (km 111.190 – 102.570) and NORTH (km 102.570 – 96.640). The southern section will be renovated in two main construction phases in 2024 (Wien-bound carriageway) and 2025 (Graz-bound carriageway). The northern section will follow in 2026 and will be completely renovated in four construction phases within one year. Most of the work will be carried out on one side of the road while traffic continues to flow – a demanding challenge in terms of construction scheduling, equipment and resource planning, and the organisation of site access.
A total of around 365,000 m² of road surface will be repaired. In open country, the superstructure will be renovated by renewing the surface and base courses in three layers, involving the installation of around 180,000 tonnes of asphalt. In addition, the waterproofing on 16 bridges and overpasses will be renewed – covering a total area of around 23,000 m². In the course of the work, around 2,500 running metres of pipes for surface drainage will also be renewed and the central reservation and safety barriers along the entire project section will be brought up to the latest technical standards.
A special feature of the project is 3D-supported construction accounting. All areas and volumes are digitally recorded section by section and modelled in collaboration with PORR's surveying department. This means that the added value remains entirely within the company and enables precise and transparent project management.
Occupational safety is also a top priority: regular toolbox meetings and safety walks on the construction site help to identify potential hazards at an early stage, coordinate work processes and ensure safe working conditions for all involved.
