At the end of 2025, PORR significantly expanded its healthcare portfolio with the acquisition of VAMED Standortentwicklung und Engineering GmbH. This added more than 30 additional healthcare projects, in countries including Austria and Romania. These include major contracts such as the AUVA Rehab Centre Meidling, the expansion of Vienna’s Hanusch hospital, Reutte district hospital in Tyrol, and Wiener Neustadt hospital.

“Today, in addition to construction and structural design, we now also offer planning services in operational organisation and medical technology – this means we can deliver healthcare properties from A to Z. This full service provision sets us apart from the competition. We’re rolling out this holistic package in all our home markets”, says PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss. According to studies, healthcare infrastructure is set to see annual global market growth of 5% to 10%. One driver is demographic change: In Austria, for example, the proportion of people aged over 65 is expected to rise from around 20% to around 26% by 2040. Across the EU, an increase to around 30% is forecast by 2050. 

Healthcare in flux

The requirements placed on modern hospitals are now so complex that construction companies can barely manage them without a wide range of specialised expertise. At the same time, the healthcare sector is in a state of flux worldwide. This is why PORR is focusing on modular construction methods that allow wards and floor plans to be quickly adapted to new technologies or changing clinical requirements. Through digitalisation and the “Smart Hospital” trend, technical infrastructure is also becoming increasingly important: Buildings are planned as interconnected systems that support artificial intelligence, telemedicine and the digital networking of patients, staff and care flows. Digital processes such as BIM – which create a data model of the building – are used right from the planning phase.

Added to this are sustainability requirements and the high energy and water consumption of hospitals – calling for resource-efficient construction methods. And ultimately, everyday hospital operations must also become more efficient. PORR works with simulations and integrative planning approaches to design wards and clinical areas in ways that minimise unnecessary routes. “This is how – with PORR Healthcare – we incorporate medical requirements into planning at an early stage and create future-proof healthcare infrastructure”, says Strauss.

PORR Healthcare success stories

The new build of Pavilion 6 at the Hanusch hospital of the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) in Vienna is currently underway. The modern healthcare centre is setting new standards in functionality and medical care. The project involves the turnkey realisation of a pavilion of around 10,500 m² with 66 beds and a state-of-the-art operating suite. In addition to the construction, the project also includes the full integration of innovative medical technology.

The comprehensive modernisation of Reutte district hospital is a critical infrastructure project for regional healthcare provision in Tyrol. The existing hospital building is being renovated in several construction phases and brought up to the latest technical standards – while remaining operational and with no restrictions on medical care. Modernised areas are being created here for numerous specialist departments, including orthopaedics, surgery, dialysis, and the paediatric and maternity ward.

Strong output in Poland and Czech Republic

PORR is also active in the healthcare sector in other home markets. In Poland, it has made an excellent name for itself as a Design & Build provider for healthcare properties and is currently realising five projects. The largest project currently underway, and one of the largest healthcare developments in the country, is the construction of the New Oncology Hospital in Wrocław. Valued at nearly EUR 250m, the contract represents the largest public healthcare investment in the history of the region. The new hospital, which will be delivered under a Design & Build contract, will provide more than 100,000 m² of gross floor area. The facility will comprise four above-ground floors and one underground level, accommodating 26 inpatient wards and 30 outpatient treatment units.

Another project is an interdisciplinary treatment and diagnostic centre for the Institute of Mother and Child in Warsaw, which is being implemented using the design-build method. PORR delivers projects covering the full scope of services, including the supply and installation of highly specialised medical equipment. Additionally, the new Cardiology Department at Bielański Hospital in Warsaw will be completed this quarter. The project included the comprehensive fit-out of the facility with state-of-the-art medical equipment, including an angiography system.

In the Czech Republic, PORR has built the new Intensive Care Simulation Centre (SCIM) of FN Motol and Homolka in Prague. The multidisciplinary training facility trains users for critical clinical situations, such as heart failure, massive bleeding or complications during anaesthesia. In designing and building the technologically complex premises, PORR relied on Building Information Modelling and LEAN methods. The project value is around EUR 20.4m.
