Tunnel construction whilst rail services continue to operate
An existing railway tunnel was refurbished on the LK 274 railway line between Walbzych and Jelenia Gora. The works involved widening the 300-metre-long existing tunnel using the ‘tunnel-in-tunnel’ tunnelling method. This method allows rail services to continue without interruption throughout the entire tunnelling process. Another distinctive feature of this project is that the power supply for rail traffic was maintained via an overhead line.
The tunnelling was carried out using a tunnel-widening portal (TWP), whilst the inner lining work was performed using a formwork system comprising reinforcement, rehabilitation and formwork carriages. All work was carried out in 24/7 shift operations to complete the construction project as quickly as possible.
