Siezenheim II Biomass Combined Heat and Power Plant

Power station construction for a sustainable energy supply

The Siezenheim II biomass combined heat and power plant is based on an efficient combined heat and power system that simultaneously generates green district heating and green electricity. By utilising the waste heat generated during the combustion process, the fuel used is utilised in a particularly resource-efficient manner. Each year, the plant generates around 102 GWh of heat and 34 GWh of electricity, thereby making a significant contribution to supplying households and businesses in the region.

Together, the Siezenheim I and Siezenheim II plants will in future cover around 20 per cent of the total district heating demand in the greater Salzburg area, extending as far as Hallein. Furthermore, around 40 per cent of the district heating is generated in a climate-neutral manner, saving around 40,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually. In addition, just under 10,000 households can be supplied with green energy.

Particular attention was also paid to sustainable construction methods. The combined heat and power plant features a photovoltaic system and a façade with extensive greening. The greening improves the microclimate, helps to cool the surrounding area and aids in the absorption of pollutants. The plant is fuelled exclusively by regional wood chips, thereby making an important contribution to the decarbonisation of the heating supply in Salzburg.

The construction work was carried out by the PORR Salzburg branch in collaboration with specialists from pde, Stump-Franki and PORR’s sheet piling department. With the successful completion of the project, PORR is supporting the State of Salzburg on its path towards a climate-neutral and energy-self-sufficient future.
