Nürtingen, Germany / 2025
A new building for art and drama therapy is being constructed on the Braike campus of the Nürtingen-Geislingen University of Applied Sciences for Economics and the Environment, due for completion by 2029. The new building will bring together various facilities, which were previously spread across different locations, at a single site. On behalf of Vermögen und Bau Baden-Württemberg, Ludwigsburg Office, PORR transport route engineering undertook extensive civil engineering works to prepare the building site. This included the relocation of existing utility lines, the installation of new sewer connections as well as work on the district heating supply.

Civil engineering works for the new Arts and Theatre Therapy centre in Nürtingen
Infrastructure for the new university campus
The new building will house teaching, work and event spaces for art and drama therapy. To enable the building to be constructed at the intended site, existing pipes and technical infrastructure had to be adapted.
PORR’s services included the relocation of existing sewage pipes, the installation of new sewer lines as well as the connection to existing supply and disposal networks. During the construction work, temporary diversions and bypasses ensured that the discharge of wastewater on campus was maintained.
Pipe and sewer construction in a confined space
A stormwater drain and a sewer ran through the future construction site and were replaced by new sewer lines. In addition, a new stormwater connection to the sewer in Schelmenwasenstraße was created. As well as this, the team laid new water pipes as well as sections of the district heating network and constructed the necessary utility trench. This work was supplemented by demolition, earthworks and road construction on the campus site.
Archaeological supervision of the construction works
The civil engineering works were carried out under special conditions. Archaeological finds were discovered on the site, which had to be taken into account during construction. Consequently, the excavation work for the new sewers was supervised by an archaeological team. Furthermore, there were works of art and landscaped outdoor areas in the immediate vicinity, which were protected during the construction works.
Construction work on an active university campus
The construction site was situated in the entrance area of the Braike Campus and bordered directly on university areas in regular use. Pedestrian traffic, deliveries as well as university operations had to be taken into account during the construction period. The construction site was therefore organised in accordance with the conditions of an active campus, where construction work and everyday university life take place in parallel.
The basis for the new building on the Braike campus
The works in Nürtingen combine utility, sewerage and road construction with the requirements of ongoing university operations. In addition to adapting the existing infrastructure, the project focused in particular on preparing the future building site as well as integrating new supply and disposal systems into the existing campus structures.
