Remediation of contaminated sites

Kapellerfeld
Remediation site N12

Kapellerfeld, Austria / 10.2016 - 04.2018

The contaminated site N12 is situated on the edge of the Marchfeld, right next to the Marchfeld Canal. The former gravel pit was used as a landfill for household waste until the 1980s. The specialist civil engineering department of PORR Bau GmbH erected a nearly 2km-long slurry wall around the site of the former landfill. Activated carbon filter windows were also installed at five selected points around the enclosure to purify the groundwater.

Remediation project at the Marchfeld Canal.

PORR Umwelttechnik GmbH then carried out the necessary surface profiling measures and earthworks. A total of 96 gas wells were installed to extract the landfill gas that continues to form inside the body of the landfill.

The soil vapour extraction system used for this purpose will be in operation for at least five years, starting in November 2017.

The entire system was designed, planned and installed by PORR Umwelttechnik. The N12 project began in October 2016 and all the construction works were completed by the end of April 2018.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
