Innovative flood protection
Harbour Gate Linz

Linz, Austria / 11.2023 - 07.2025

The Harbour Gate Linz project is creating a key element of flood protection on the Danube. Together with other protective measures, the new harbour gate facility protects the harbour district and adjacent urban areas from extreme flooding and sustainably strengthens the resilience of the urban infrastructure.

Future-proof infrastructure to protect the city and the port

On behalf of LINZ Service GmbH, the PORR – Andritz consortium has been implementing a complex infrastructure project in the area of the Linz harbour entrance since November 2023. The project forms part of the national flood protection strategy along the Danube and, in addition to the construction of a mobile flood protection system, also involves the waterproofing of the existing separation dyke and the construction of a new, modern harbour gate system. Completion is scheduled for mid-2025.

At the heart of the project is a mobile closure for the harbour entrance in the form of a large-scale sliding gate. In the event of flooding, the system can be closed, thereby reliably protecting the port area and the neighbouring districts from flooding. The protective measures are designed to withstand flood events with a statistical return period of up to 300 years and thus make a significant contribution to the long-term safety of people, infrastructure and the business location.

Complex interplay of a wide range of construction disciplines

The construction of the harbour gate places high demands on planning, coordination and technical implementation. The project brings together numerous specialist disciplines within a single construction project – from design-and-build planning, through specialised civil engineering, earthworks and structural engineering, to sophisticated pile-driving techniques. The particular challenge, as highlighted , lies in combining hydraulic engineering, geotechnical and structural requirements whilst harbour operations continue.

Thanks to its broad expertise across all areas of infrastructure construction, PORR is able to coordinate and efficiently deliver all services from a single source. Close collaboration between the specialist departments involved enables the project to be realised in a technically sophisticated and cost-effective manner, whilst maintaining a high standard of workmanship.

The Linz Harbour Gate is creating a modern flood defence system that goes far beyond traditional hydraulic engineering. The project combines innovative engineering solutions with sustainable infrastructure development and lays the foundations to ensure that the Port of Linz and the surrounding neighbourhoods remain effectively protected from the effects of extreme flood events in the future.
