Cityring: complete overhaul

Lucerne, Switzerland / 04.2010 - 06.2013

The section of the A2 motorway between the Emmen and Kriens junctions was, after nearly 40 years of service through all weathers and heavy traffic, scheduled for renovation. In the course of the four-year total overhaul project, the Lucerne Cityring was brought up to the latest standards of technology and safety.

The complex conditions—up to 90,000 vehicles per day, high levels of peak traffic and limited possibilities for detours—made the project a massive logistical and organisational challenge. Numerous tasks had to be managed:

In the tunnel

  • Restoration of the concrete road surfaces and surface protection system
  • Creation of SOS recesses and cross connections
  • Replacement of road surface
  • Renovation of drainage pipes
  • Extension of the northern entrance
  • Restoration of noise protection measures
  • Renovation of corrosion protection on steel elements
