First use of the NATM construction method in Romania

Commissioned by the Romanian motorway authority CNAIR, this major project – comprising a twin-tube tunnel with two lanes in each direction – is Romania’s first motorway tunnel to be constructed using the modern New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM).

The complex geology presented a particular challenge. Layers of unstable clay, silt and sand alternated with one another. This was ideal for the use of NATM, in which the surrounding rock is utilised as an active part of the support system. In addition to the tunnelling work, PORR was therefore also responsible for the internal formwork concreting as well as the control and safety systems.

This infrastructure project thus demonstrates not only PORR’s broad service portfolio, but also its innovative and precise construction methods – particularly in challenging conditions.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
