The existing Karawanken tunnel, a border tunnel between the Republic of Austria and Slovenia on the A11 Karawanken motorway, has a total length of 7.9km. 4,441m of the tunnel are on Austrian territory, a further 3,477m on Slovenian territory.

Tunnel sealing on the new 2nd pipe
In 2018, ASFINAG started the full expansion of the Karawanken tunnel, at the same time as the Slovenian motorway operator DARS.
The first step was the construction of a second tunnel pipe.
The company Swietelsky Tunnelbau was awarded the contract for construction and IAT was commissioned to carry out the waterproofing of the tunnel.
For the tunnel sealers from IAT, who had already been involved in the waterproofing work on the first pipe, the special challenge of the project was the ambitious construction time.
Thanks to the experience and the specific know-how of our tunnel sealing team, the task is in the best hands with IAT.
